Assignment 2: Film case study research

Your chosen movie

1) What film have you chosen?

Frozen is the movie I have chosen.

2) Why did you choose this film in particular?

I chose this movie as it has a unique representation of women as usually its a male character with a female as love interest whereas in Frozen the main characters are two independent females who don't dependent on male characters this gets rid of the stereotypical fact that women are weaker than men.

Institutional background

1) What was the film studio or production company behind your chosen film? E.g. Warner Brothers, Paramount etc.

Walt Disney was the production company behind Frozen.

2) Who was the distributor for the theatrical release of the film in the UK?

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

No brand loyalty

1) What genre does your chosen film fit into?

Frozen fits into the genre of Animation but also would go in with Adventure and Comedy.

2) How can you tell it fits that genre? Be specific with reference to the trailer.

I can tell that Frozen is a Adventure and Comedy because the main character Anna goes on a journey to find her older sister Elsa to bring her back home, also to reverse the curse she put in her home town before she took off  and along the way meet s new characters and face some challenges.

3) Does your chosen film have any stars or a director that are known for that particular genre?
Chris Buck the  director of Frozen is well known for his Animation movies such as Pocahontas , Surf's Up, Tarzan and many more Animation movies. Jennifer Lee the Assistant Director is known for writing Wreck it Ralph , Zootropolis and many more.

It’s all a matter of timing

1) What was the UK release date for your chosen film?

The release date for Frozen is December 6, 2013

2) When did the first trailer appear on YouTube for your movie? Find the earliest example you can and embed it in your blog.

The first Frozen trailer was released on the Sep 26, 2013.

3) What other examples of marketing (teaser trailers, main trailers, newspaper or TV interviews etc.) can you find for your chosen film from before the film’s release date?

https://youtu.be/TbQm5doF_Uc

 https://youtu.be/-WdC4DaYIeQ

It’s a social thing

1) What was the word-of-mouth like for your chosen film?

Frozen movie has many good reviews by the public and became the number 1 movie for children. Due to the success of Frozen Disney created toys and games from the film. Frozen was not only enjoyable to young viewers but to older viewers too. the film was such a success that Disney made a sequel called Frozen Fever.

2) Find three quotes (no more than 25 words each) from user reviews of your movie to create a picture of what the public reaction to the film has been. Post them on your blog.

Risky business

1) What was the original budget for your chosen film?

The original budget for Frozen was $150 million.

2) How much money did the film make in the opening weekend?

Frozen earned $67.4 million in its first three days , as the highest opening weekend earner for the company's animation unit.

3) How much money has the film made in total? (Look for the subheading ‘Gross’ which has the total box-office earnings listed).

Disney's 2013 hit frozen has grossed £30,807,697 billion at the box office.

4) For a film to be considered a box office success, it needs to make at least two-and-a-half times the budget in box office takings. Using this method, was the film you have chosen a success? (Or, if it's a recent release, do you expect it to be a box office success?)

Frozen was a success as it made $1.219 billion at the box office. Frozen has earned $1.2 billion worldwide, becoming the fifth highest-grossing film of all time and highest-grossing animation. The film has gained 2 Academy awards, a Bafta and a Golden globe.

Stars in their eyes

1) What films has the director previously directed? Are they in the same or similar genres?

Chris Buck was also the director of Tarzan , Surf's Up and was apart of the animation department of the movie Pocahontas. All these genres are the same as they are all animated movies.

 2) Who is the main star in the film?

The main stars are Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell.

3) What other films has the main star appeared in? Are any of the films similar to the one you are researching?

Idina Menzel has also appeared  in the movie Enchanted which is also a Disney movie.
Kristen Bell has also appeared in the animation movie Astro Boy.

4) Are the stars or the director or writer mentioned in the trailer for the film?

No, only the studio ( Disney )  is mentioned in the movie trailer .

Media blog feedback and LR

WWW: Some excellent posts – but also some missing work. The photo storyboard contains some superb shots with accurate explanations and your discussion of representation for the LIAR analysis of Insurgent is probably the best I’ve read so far. That’s the toughest key concept and you’re already picking out some very interesting ideas.

EBI: You need to post your missing work: no fruit bowl; no Minority Report shot-by-shot analysis. For the photo storyboard, some of your shots are great but you’re lacking close-ups – particularly towards the end. That’s how the audience develops an emotional connection with characters. For the LIAR poster analysis, Institution needs to improve – you can’t just cut-and-paste from the internet.

LR: Post the two missing pieces of work. Then, reflect on your first month of Media. What do you feel is your strongest piece of work so far? What is your weakest? What specific skills or knowledge do you need to develop over the rest of the course?

CAMERAWORK AND EDITING : MINORITY REPORT ANALYSIS

Camerawork and editing: Minority Report analysis

Medium close up ( MCU )

The medium close up shot allows the audience to see the facial expressions of the characters but also allows us to see the background so we are still able to see some of the action happening within the scene. In this scene we can see that the leading man at the front is clearly very serious and concentrated also quite worried as he has to arrest his boss. Also the fact that there are so many officers trying to catch one man builds tension. Therefore the audience will be curious to see what will happen and anticipated to see the action of chasing him.

ESTABLISHING SHOT ( ES )

This is a long shot of an abandoned car in an alley way. The long shot allows the audience to see where the action will be taking place. The alleyway is very dark which creates a negative feel which foreshadows that something bad might happen in the next scene.

CLOSE UP ( CU )hhb

This shot allows the audience to identify the main character also the use of this close up allows the audience to see the emotion on the character therefore the audience can relate/ understand his feelings. From this shot the we can see that he is clearly angry or annoyed of the fact that the officers are approaching him. This builds up tension for the audience as they interpret that something bad will happen.

PHOTO STORY BOARD / CAMERA SHOT ANALYSIS

We picked a wide / establishing shot as it is used to introduce a location or to set the scene. Therefore we have chosen this camera shot in order to inform the audience about the surroundings and where the story or scene will take place.

We then chose a over the shoulder shot that is normally used to represent conversations between people but in this case we choose to use it to show the point of view from the stalker to show the victim she has targeted.

We then chose a high angle shot to show the inside of the building that the victim. We also choose this shot to introduce the stalkers face.

This is at a lower angle to show dominance and power the stalker has over the victim. This also shows that the victim still does not seem to realise that he is being followed.

This is a medium close up as it visibly shows the head and shoulders. This makes it easier to recognise any facial expressions or emotions. This photograph makes the victim looks small and vulnerable.
This will also create a sense of sympathy for others as they see how weak he appears to be in this shot.

We choose a medium close up again to show that the victim is still unaware of the stalker also to show that where ever the victim seem to turn she is always there watching him.

Long shot : to introduce the new environment. In this scene finally the victim realises that he is being followed therefore makes a run for it. This shows that the victim is terrified at this point however we see the stalker who stands there calm as she knows that there is no escape for him.

Long shot : We choose to continue using long shot so it is easier to see the action happening. In this is the stalker has caught the victim and attacks him. Although it is a long shot we can see that the victim is struggling and scared at this point.

Long shot : we continue using long shot so that the audience can see the action going on. In this scene the victim is now been pushed down the hill by the stalker.

Long shot; In this scene the victim is rolling down the hill clearly helpless and the stalker is standing at the top the hill laughing as she has managed to achieve her goal.

Medium shot: This shot shows that the victim has been killed and you see the stalker feet on the side.

FILM POSTER ANALYSIS

Image result

Language:

The title and tag-line, release date all follow the expected codes and conventions of a film poster. The poster contains images of the stars in the main picture but not their names which could suggest they are well known.
The poster features an image in the form of glass breaking to give an idea that you need to see it this could draw in audience as it creates interest in the poster. the only tagline featured is that it is part of the Divergent series , this would create and interest in the audience who have seen the first film and could also make a new audience want to watch the series. The sky in the background of the image is cloudy , this could suggest conflict in the film.

Institution:

Release date: March 19, 2015 (United Kingdom) .Insurgent was directed by Robert Schwentke, produced by Douglas Wick, Lucy FisherPouya Shabazian. Production companies Red Wagon Entertainment, Summit Entertainment, Mandeville Films.
Starring   Shailene Woodley ,Theo James, Octavia Spencer, Jai Courtney ,Ray Stevenson ,ZoĆ« Kravitz , MilesTeller, Ansel Elgort ,Maggie Q, Naomi Watts , Kate Winslet.

Audience:

The main target audience of " Divergent " looks like it would be mixed gender however perphaps slightly more females because the film poster has a male and female character so we know it must be some sort of romance and young females tend to like romance movies.

Representation:

The female character is presented in a new view as she looks like a strong female character holding a gun covered up not so revealing how normally female are shown in film posters. The effect of the audience is that more females would like to watch it as it gives a different and new view of women. Also because it is clearly an action movie but what is unusual is that it seems that a women has the main starring role which is unusual because usually in action movies men have the main starring role.
